Men’s Support Groups: Frequently Asked Questions

Looking for a men’s support group but have questions?
Whether you’re new to peer-support groups or want to understand how they usually work, this FAQ section covers common questions about finding groups, attending for the first time, online options, privacy, and what to do if you need urgent help.

Use the group listings or visit the official group websites linked on this page to explore public-facing options that may suit your location, availability, and comfort level. MMH provides information and signposting only. We do not run these groups or provide direct support.

What are men’s support groups?
Men’s support groups provide a safe space where men can connect, share experiences, and support each other. These groups may focus on mental health, addiction recovery, fatherhood, bereavement, or general wellbeing.
How do I find a men’s support group?
Use the search tool above to find local and online men’s support groups. Simply enter your town or city to see which networks are active in your area.
Can I attend a support group without speaking?
Yes, there is no pressure to talk. Many men find it helpful just to listen and gradually feel more comfortable sharing their own story at their own pace.
What types of men’s support groups are available?

The MMH directory includes various styles of support, including:

  • Mental health and wellbeing talking groups
  • Addiction recovery peer-support
  • Fatherhood and parenting circles
  • Grief and bereavement support
  • Sport-based activity groups (Football, Boxing, etc.)
  • Social connection (Men's Sheds, Walking groups)
  • Veterans and ex-forces specific support
Do men’s support groups meet online?
Yes, many organisations offer online meetings via Zoom, Discord, or other platforms. You can find these by using the "Online" filter in our directory.
Will my privacy be protected in a support group?
Most groups follow strict confidentiality guidelines to ensure a safe environment. However, policies may vary by organisation; we recommend confirming specific privacy rules with the group lead.
Do I need a referral to join a support group?
No. The majority of groups in our directory are open for self-referral, meaning you can join by simply contacting them or attending a session via the links provided.
What if I need urgent mental health support?
If you are in crisis, please contact emergency services or a dedicated crisis helpline such as Samaritans (116 123) or Shout (text ‘SHOUT’ to 85258). Peer support groups are not a substitute for clinical or emergency care.
What if I can’t find a support group in my town?
If your search doesn't return a local group, our system automatically displays our National Groups who provide support across the UK and online. We also recommend checking the nearest major city for regional hubs.
